New “to us” Spirits!

MT. Hood Vodka

We recently just picked up their vodka, which was released last year around June. Mt. Hood Vodka is a spirit distilled from grain, and is hand crafted in Hood River, Oregon. Straight from the distillery themselves:

CAMP 1805 DISTILLERY AND BAR

“We are proud to be doing something first in Hood River, Oregon. Such as being the first legal Rum and Whiskey distillery that this town has ever had. Yes, that is right, we are the first. Here at Camp 1805 we are making it from scratch, in house. We placed our still behind a wall of glass so that you can see what we are up to. As a matter of fact you can have a taste of whiskey while watching the still run. And if there is time we’ll try to take you on a tour.   So if you are in town come on down to the waterfront to see what we are all about. We are serving up amazingly crafted cocktails, offering some fantastic bites and of course selling bottles of Camp 1805 spirits. Come on down, we’d love to see you.”  Visit their website to learn more about the distillery, and check out some local spirits: Camp1805.com.

Brody’s Apple Pie Moonshine
“Making moonshine in the backwoods of the Oregon valley.” Hand crafted and bottled by New Generation Bootleggers, Bend Or.
“Perfected over two years, our recipe brings out a true homemade apple pie flavor. Crafted with six natural ingredients that will leave your taste buds with hints of clover honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and others. Many long days and nights went into the development of this recipe resulting in the smoothest apple pie flavor you will find on the market.” The team also describes what else makes them special on their website, they credit their recipe to the corn, water and proof. For more details about what makes this local spirit so great take a look at their website: Brodysmoonshine.com

High West Distillery Barreled Manhattan “The 36th Vote”
“The High West Barreled Manhattan is made from two parts of High West’s Double Rye! Whiskey, one part sweet red vermouth, and two dashes of Angostura bitters for every 2.5-ounce serving. It was then aged in a 2-year-old rye whiskey barrel for 3-6 months. The addition of the vermouth lowers the pH and the percent alcohol by volume – increasing the break down of the oak’s hemi-cellulose, increasing the wood sugars that dissolve into the “cocktail” inside. Because a barrel “breaths”, there’s also some oxidation of the “cocktail.” This mellows out the sharpness of the bitters and vermouth, making what we think is a darn fine elixir. We hope you enjoy tasting this as much as we did making it.” This statement comes straight from the distillers themselves, click here to visit their website for more information about this spirit.
Drinkhacker.com had this to say about this blended spirit: “Results: Incredibly impressive. This is for all intents and purposes a high-grade Manhattan like you’d get at any upscale bar. It’s a little sweeter than I might mix up, but that makes it incredibly easy-drinking. Lots of red cherry fruit character here, with that spicy rye especially evident on the nose. Go easy on the ice, or you’ll kill off some of the character here — it’s drinkable even warm, like a good whiskey. Add a cherry if you’re feeling decadent.”

Big Bottom Small Batch Oregon Gin

“Until last year, Big Bottom Distilling – makers of the award-winning Big Bottom Whiskey – sourced its whiskey and rum from external distillers, blending and bottling the spirit in Hillsboro.

Since then, Big Bottom has taken a step forward in their production by distilling the new 91 proof (45% abv) gin, which retails at US$29.95.

Founder and owner, Ted Pappas and his new head distiller, Travis Schoney, said they aimed to capture the flavour of Oregon in their 100-gallon copper still by using a floral blend comprising 16 of the state’s natural botanicals.

“We are extremely excited to finally be able to distill our own line of spirits,” Schoney said. “It’s very much like a painter with a blank canvas – we have the capability to create extraordinary products with unique and amazing flavor profiles that will appeal to all palates.”

“We chose to distill gin as Big Bottom’s first distilled product because we thought it would allow us to create something uniquely Oregon. We carefully chose a series of botanicals that would offer a flavour profile that best represents the beautiful qualities of Oregon,” added Pappas.

The product is described as a slightly sweet gin with a rich, complex mouth feel and creamy body.” Head on over to thespiritsbusiness.com for more information and great articles on spirits.

Westland American Single Malt Whiskey

“Westland American Single Malt Whiskey is made from five exceptional roasted and kilned barley malts – the base of which is pale malt grown right in the state of Washington. Drawing inspiration from the rich craft brewing culture of the Pacific Northwest, several specialty malts (Munich Malt, Extra Special Malt, Pale Chocolate Malt and Brown Malt) are then added before the resulting mash is fermented with a Belgian brewer’s yeast for 144 hours. Then, the whiskey is distilled through Westland’s copper-pot stills and aged in new American Oak casks – half of which have a #3 char and the other half of which have a #4 char – for a minimum of 24 months.

Westland American Single Malt Whiskey has an aroma of cherries, almonds and graham crackers, which leads to a rich palate filled with vanilla, coconut and creme brulee. The whiskey finishes with more nutty chocolate, coffee, shortbread cookies and pine.”  For more information on this whiskey click here and other great product reviews head on over to caskers.com.

Big Bottom Whiskey Barlow Trail Port Cask

“Big Bottom continues the tradition of finishing our spirits in wine casks by introducing Barlow Trail, Port Cask Finish. We use our proprietary American blended whiskey as the base whiskey and finish it in a 10 year Tawny Port barrel for about 6 months. It presents a bright, sweet berry and citrus nose. On the palate, it showcases a fresh, ripe berry followed by a small hint of peppery spice that gives way to a very smooth, rich and malty quality from the French Oak Port casks. Barlow Trail, Port Finished Blended Whiskey won a Silver Medal at the 2015 American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) Awards.” To learn more about the Hillsboro owned Big Bottom Whiskey check out BigBottomDistilling.com.
