Beefeater Burrough’s Reserve Gin-

“The Gin is a light amber color, with a slight shimmer of golden hues in it: it is neither subtle, nor dark.

Warm, with floral notes, lemon, orange peel, camphorous herbal mid-notes hinting at pine and rosemary at the same time, but never directly. A kind of amorphous multi-faceted nose that is inviting, but complex.

The palate begins up front with some citrus. Lemon peel in particular, then some mid-notes that bring comparisons to a more traditional gin, with some earthy angelica complimented with a touch of cassia and nutmeg. The finish is where there’s a touch of piney juniper, but the highlight is the creamy rich finish with vanilla, citrus, and a hint of warm, sweet, oak. Again, like the nose, complex and interesting, with many different flavors catching one another. One thing that did catch me off guard is that the base spirit does not immediately remind me of Beefeater. Though there’s some traditional notes, the profile leans slightly more contemporary.” For the full review check out theginisin.com.

New Tequila

We received some new tequila, just in time for this spring weather!

Porfidio Anejo-

“The Single-Barrel Añejo has been the most successful product of the popular Porfidio line. Normally tequila añejo is stored in a number of oak barrels and upon completion of the aging process the contents of each barrel is then combined prior to bottling in order to achieve a level of consistency from bottle to bottle. The contents of each bottle of Porfidio Cactus Single-Barrel is direct from a single selected barrel. Porfidio Añejo Single-Barrel has been the winner in four consecutive years of the World Champion Añejo Tequila Award by the Wine Enthusiast with the highest qualification ever given to a tequila brand (98 out of 100).” To read more about this product and the unique way that the bottle is crafted click here.

Tequila Celestial Anejo-

“Tequila Celestial Añejo is 100% Blue Agave produced in Amatitan, Jalisco. Double distilled and aged for 18 months in Kentucky bourbon barrels, Tequila Celestial Añejo is a full bodied favorite, suggestive of the finer things in life.”

“After harvest, our hand selected piñas are traditionally baked in stone ovens, bringing out the agave’s natural sweetness and robust flavor. Sweet agave juice is then pressed from the baked piñas, filtered and fermented 100% naturally without yeast, taking 7-10 days longer than yeast enhanced fermentation. The extra time is worth the wait, producing some of the smoothest and best tasting tequila available at any price. For added purity, our tequilas are double distilled in stainless vats, and then clarified through cold filtration. Double distillation maintains the flavor profiles of the sweet agave without leaving a strong alcohol essence in the palate. Finally, our tequilas are estate bottled using triple filtered well water that only enhances the sweet top notes of each variety.”

Maestro Dobel-

We now carry Maestro Dobel full line of tequila, available in blanco, reposado and anejo.

“Dobel™ Tequila is one of the United States’ fastest growing ultra-premium tequilas. Named after its founder (Dobel is his abbreviated name – Juan Domingo Beckmann Legoretta) the tequila is sourced from single estates and is distilled from 100% blue agave and bottled in Jalisco, Mexico. Each bottle of Dobel™ Tequila is double-distilled, matured in Hungarian White Oak barrels, and filtered for exceptional smoothness and clarity. Dobel™ Tequila is recognized for its superior smoothness and iconic packaging which includes a stopper and a modern twist on a vintage apothecary-style bottle, a heavily embossed bottle whose design is inspired by the laboratory sample bottles used by the distillery’s Maestro Tequileros (Master Distillers).” For more information go to their website: maestrodobel.com.

More New Whiskey!

James E. Pepper 1776  6 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey

“James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a mash of approximately 62% corn and malted barley, and 38% rye. After distillation, the bourbon is aged for a minimum of six years in new, American oak casks. As a result, it has slightly sweet hints of vanilla, toffee and caramel, that subtly compliment notes of baking spices, spicy rye and oak.

James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey earned the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2013.

“We used the same traditional methods that Pepper championed in order to restore this whiskey,” says Peay. Try this traditional whiskey today!”

“Tasting Notes: Slightly sweet hints of vanilla, toffee and caramel, that subtly compliment notes of baking spices and oaky wood.” For more information check out: www.caskers.com

1776

Black Bottle Blended Scotch Whisky

“Black Bottle is a blended scotch comprised of (according to the website) “seven of the island [Islay]’s classic malts alongside some of the finest grain available.” Since Islay only has eight active distilleries (Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, and the too-recently-opened Kilchoman) and it’s unlikely to contain any of the very rare and sought-after closed distilleries (Malt Mill, Port Ellen), I think we can safely say what’s in it. In fact, before Kilchoman opened, Black Bottle’s marketing verbage proudly proclaimed the inclusion of product from “all of Islay’s single malt distilleries”. The Black Bottle brand is now owned by Burn Stewart Distillers Ltd., which also owns Bunnahabhain, so it’s also a safe bet that a lot of that distillery’s malt makes it into the blend.

Black Bottle tends to win a lot of awards and has quite a following, even among malt-heads. Oh, here’s the kicker: this guy’s only about $20 a bottle in the US.”

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Tarry, earthy overtones, with a smoky barbeque sauce-like sweetness. Oh God, now I can’t smell anything but barbeque sauce! The alcohol tickle is piquant – despite the baseline 40% ABV, this crawls right up your nose. Undercurrents of chewing tobacco and mulching leaves.

Palate: Nice creamy mouthfeel. Green and vegetal up front, then some salted caramels and finally a burst of woodsmoke. Very tame on the tongue. Really, it’s very orderly for something that’s all Islay.

Finish: Only of medium length, despite all the peat. Sweet, burnt sugar, freshly-dug earth. Very mild bitterness in the back on the tongue. Remains sweet and smoky through the fade-out. Pleasant.

Haig Club Whisky & Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky

Haig Club Whisky

“Haig Whisky is the oldest of all scotch whiskies and may even be the oldest whisky in the world.

Haig whisky is steeped in history since it was first distilled by John Haig in Cameronbridge Scotland in 1824. From these humble beginnings, Haig Whisky quickly rose to become one of the most successful and popular Scotch whiskies in the world before falling into decline some 30 years ago as it left the Haig family ownership and was passed through a series of multinational drinks companies.

The Cameronbridge distillery meanwhile went from strength to strength and now, in the ownership of Diageo, is one of the largest distilleries in Europe.

In 2014, Diageo launched a new Haig whisky to add to the existing old guard whisky stable of Haig Gold Label, Haig Dimple and Haig Pinch blended scotch whiskies. Haig Club, in its distinctive square blue bottle and luxury packaging, is a smooth, versatile and easy drinking single grain scotch whisky aimed at converting a new generation of younger drinker over to the wonderful world of Scotch Single Grain Whisky. Diageo say that it’s a blend of three grain whiskies each of which have been matured in different types of casks.

David Beckham is the public face of the first new offering in more than 30 years from Haig Whisky, one of the oldest whiskies in the world. Haig Club is an exceptionally easy drinking whisky firmly aimed at converting a new generation to the wonderful world of Scotch whisky drinking. It’s smooth, sophisticated and stylish. It’s modern Scotland in a glass!” Learn more at: www.haigwhisky.com.

HAIG CLUB SCOTCH WHISKY TASTING NOTES: Nose: Fresh, smooth and pleasantly fruity on first sniff with a tang of citrus. Taste: Slightly sweet at first warming to a warm soft gingerbread and whisky mouth feel. Finish: Vanilla and faint background of burnt wood.

Haig Club

Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky

“Nikka operates two Coffey stills (named after its inventor Aeneas Coffey) within the Miyagikyo distillery for the elaboration of its grain whiskies. Imported from Scotland in 1963, these old stills yield a distillate with more flavour and depth than modern column stills, imparting a distinct character that defines the house blends. These two unique bottlings showcase the innovative spirit of Nikka.”

COFFEY MALT

45% – 70cl

“The Nikka Coffey Malt is the result of a unique distillation process in “Coffey” type column stills, which are normally used for grain whisky production. This rare 100% malt bottling offers a surprisingly rich texture.” www.nikkawhisky.eu

TASTING NOTES

“This is not “Japanese Bourbon” or even “Japanese Corn Whiskey.” This is quite something…else. There is no age statement, but the benchmark for this whisky is 8-12 years. The profile is carnival candy filled, and while it is slick, it is not sticky sweet on your palate. Some vanilla and cinnamon are added to the flavor found along with honey wine and peaches” Head on over to: drinkdistiller.com for a full tasting review.

New Whiskey!

We have new whiskey! With the winter season continuing, what could be better than a nice bourbon or rye whiskey to help warm you up? So let us introduce to you the newest whiskies to take up residence on our shelves. First up, we have Redemption Rye whiskey. “Rye whiskey was once the predominant brown spirit in the United States. Classic cocktails- The Manhattan, The Whiskey Sour, and The Old Fashioned were originally created with Rye Whiskey. Prohibition changed that, and the spirit of Rye was oft forgotten by many. Redemption Rye’s goal is to bring back this feisty spirit and restore its grand place in every bar. While the law states that a whiskey must be 51% Rye to be classified as a Rye, Redemption Rye’s mash bill contains 97% rye- aged in charred new oak barrels . properly aged, we then bottle it at a bold 92 proof- perfect to stand up on its own in any cocktail or by itself in your favorite glass.” Distilled in the Indiana heartland. Bottled by Barrel Selections in Bardstown, Kentucky. For more information on the nose, taste, and a detailed review of this Rye whiskey head on over to: www.spiritsreview.com.

The next new whiskey that we now carry is Barlow Trail, a blended American whiskey from Big Bottom small batch bottled in Hillsboro, OR. “Our American Blended Whiskey is a proprietary blend of three well-aged whiskeys and contains no neutral spirits staying true to what we’re all about – whiskey. It exhibits subtle floral notes with hints of salted caramel and vanilla along with just the right amount of oak and spice. Barlow Trail was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2014 Washington Cup Spirits Competition and a Gold Medal at the 2014 Great American Distiller’s Festival.” For more information abour Big Bottom Whiskey check out their website: www.bigbottomwhiskey.com. Also, check out: www.drinkhacker.com for a detailed review on this new whiskey.

The last new whiskey that we received is Kentucky Vintage Bourbon. “Handcrafted original sour mash bourbon. From a select few barrels, Kentucky’s most skilled master distillers carefully hand-pick the very few barrels that meet their criteria for small batch bourbon. Like fine Cognac ans great Chateau’s, a limited few barrels become destined for greatness. This bourbon has been allowed to age long beyond that of any ordinary bourbon, giving it a taste and flavor characteristics not found among other bourbons. Kentucky Vintage is handcrafted in very small quantities in the heart of the Bluegrass- Kentucky’s famous bourbon producing region. It is true vintage bourbon from our small batch. Made with pure lime stone water and only the finest natural ingredients. Aged many long years in select new charred oak barrels until full maturity is reached.” Bottled by Kentucky Vintage Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky.
